Electricity bill split calculator

Split a shared electricity bill fairly between roommates or PG tenants: each person pays for the days they actually lived there. Enter the bill, the two meter-reading dates, and when anyone moved in or out.

Who lived there

Leave a date empty if they were there from the first reading, or still there at the new one. “Moved out on” is the day they left, which is not counted.

How the split works

The period between the two meter readings is divided into stretches by who was living there. Each stretch’s part of the bill is shared equally by the people present during it, and a stretch with only one person goes entirely to them. Shares are rounded to whole rupees and always add up to exactly the bill.

With the example above, ₹2,400 for 1 to 31 October: Asha was there all month and Ravi from 16 October. The first half of the period is Asha’s alone (₹1,200); the second half is shared (₹600 each). Asha pays ₹1,800 and Ravi ₹600, where an equal split would have charged Ravi ₹1,200.

When someone moved out

Enter the day they left as their move-out date (that day is not counted). They pay only for the stretch they were there. For example, ₹3,000 for 1 to 31 October, with Asha there all month and Ravi leaving on 16 October: both shared the first half (₹750 each) and Asha alone the second (₹1,500), so Asha pays ₹2,250 and Ravi ₹750.

If nobody lived there for a few days (one person left before the next arrived), that part of the bill is shared in proportion to the time each person stayed.

In OurGuests itself, a bill is split among the tenants living in the room when the reading is recorded, so take a reading on the day someone moves out and record that bill before ending their stay.

The same calculation OurGuests uses

This is the split OurGuests uses to bill PG rooms. In the app you enter one meter reading per room; it works out the bill from the room’s rate, adds each tenant’s share to their account and notifies them, and every tenant can see how their share was calculated.

Frequently asked questions

Is the calculator free?

Yes, it is free with no sign-up. Nothing you enter is saved.

Can I include someone who moved out during the month?

Yes. Enter the day they left as “Moved out on”. They pay only for the days they were there, and the others share the rest.

Why not split the electricity bill equally?

An equal split charges someone who stayed a few days as much as someone who stayed the whole period. Splitting by days present charges each person for their own time.

Can I enter units and rate instead of the bill amount?

Yes. Choose “Units × rate” and enter the units used and the rate per unit; the bill is worked out for you.

How do I share the result?

Use “Share on WhatsApp” or “Copy result” under the table to send everyone their share.
